Knitted Hat 1x1 Rib Stitch

Updated: Dec 11, 2024

So these hats are VERY easy to knit - This

pattern is made in the flat and seamed up - but if you can use circular knitting needles, I'd choose that option, it's much easier and saves you a job at the end. You can also use double pointed if you prefer - I just find them too fiddly so I avoid them as long as possible.

It's made all in 1 section from bottom to top - and they can easily be adjusted to fit the person you are knitting for - I'd just use my measurements as a rough guide.

Size Circumference Height Height (measured with the trim folded) (flat/un-folded)

0-3m 17cm - 27cm 13cm 19cm

3-6m 18cm - 32cm 14cm 20½cm

6-12m 20cm - 37cm 15cm 22cm

1-2Y 22cm - 42cm 16cm 23½cm

3-5Y 24cm - 46cm 17cm 24cm

6-9Y 26cm - 50cm 18cm 26½cm

10-12Y 28cm - 54cm 19cm 28cm

Teen/Adult S 30cm - 58cm 21cm 29½cm

Adult M/L 32cm - 62cm 23cm 31cm

Yarn

Choose a yarn with good elasticity - which requires a 5mm needle. I like to use Drops Nepal - they have a huge amount of colours and the yarn bounces back lovely after it settles.

Key

k1 = knit 1 stitch

p1 = purl 1 stitch

st = stitch

rpt = repeat

[ ] = repeat bracket – repeat what is inside the brackets as instructed

K2tog = knit two stitches together. Knit into the next two stitches at the same time.

P2tog = purl two stitches together. Purl into the next two stitches at the same time.

rsf = right side of knitting facing you

wsf = wrong side of knitting facing yo

Sewing up your hat (for knitted flat on single pointed needles only)

My recommended technique for sewing up your hat is ‘mattress stitch’ as it will give you a completely invisible seam.

Cast on

60,64,72,80,88,96,104,112,120,

row 1 With rsf k2 [p2, k2] rpt to end

row 2 With wsf p2 [k2, p2] rpt to end

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until end of row

48,52,56,60,64,68,72,76,80

Start to decrease (working flat)

When decreasing work each stitch tightly to pull the decreases together on the needle

Row 1 With rsf k2 [p2tog, k2] rpt to end

Row 2 With wsf p2tog [k1, p2tog] rpt to end

Row 3 With rsf k1 [k2tog] rpt to end

Row 4 With wsf [p2tog] rpt until last stitch then p1

Cast off

I like to keep all the stitches on the needle and cut the yarn leaving a nice length. Thread this through a tapestry needle and place every stitch onto the needle so you can pull the work together - it'll bring the top part of the hat to a close, then sew the seam down the side (wrong side facing out).

Start to decrease (working in round)

Round 1 [k2, p2tog] rpt to end

Round 2 [k2tog, p1] rpt to end

Round 3 [k2tog] rpt to end

Round 4 [k2tog] rpt until last stitch then k1

Cast off

I like to keep all the stitches on the needle and cut the yarn leaving a nice length. Thread this through a tapestry needle and place every stitch onto the needle so you can pull the hole closed like a drawstring.
